Independent publishers at Leipzig Book Fair

If you want to get a picture of the abundance of young German-language literature, Leipzig is a good place to start. For Leipzig Book Fair, independent publishers are an important way to present the diversity of the publishing landscape. Independent publishers enrich the book landscape with their authors and their perspectives on world events. Leipzig Book Fair also thrives on their literary diversity and creative passion.

The independent publishers' programme

Publishers’ presentations and programmes can be enjoyed in Hall 5 in the forum for independents called “Die Unabhängigen” and in the Young Publishers’ reading island in Hall 5. The programme of the Leipzig liest reading festival is designed to further highlight authors and their books.

The Kurt Wolff Foundation is an important partner. The forum for independents called “Die Unabhängigen” – a project of Leipzig Book Fair and the Kurt Wolff Foundation – has been a feature since 2015. In the evening, the forum moves into the city for the late edition called “Spätausgabe”.

In addition, since 2001, the annual Kurt-Wolff-Prize has been awarded for lifetime achievement, a complete works, or the exemplary publishing programme of a German or Germany-based independent publishing house.
